The short answer: If you have already filed Form I-140 or I-130 and your category is eligible, you can file Form I-485 online through your own USCIS account. If you want to file I-485 on the same day as I-140 or I-130, online filing is available only when a lawyer files for you or you are filing your own I-140. Everyone else must mail a paper filing. For an online I-485, you upload a completed PDF. After a successful upload, you first get a submission confirmation, not a receipt number. USCIS says processing the uploaded PDF may take up to 30 days. Online I-485 filing is generally $50 cheaper than paper filing; eligible I-131 advance parole filings are also $50 cheaper.[1][2][6]

Can I file Form I-485 online?
Yes, but it depends on your category. USCIS lists employment-based I-485 filings based on Form I-140 and family-based filings based on Form I-130 among the categories that can be filed online. Eligible applicants and attorneys may file online. Other categories must be mailed according to USCIS's list.[1][2]
If Form I-140 or I-130 has already been filed, an eligible applicant can submit I-485 through their own account. Do not use an employer's or relative's account to file your I-485.[1]
The rules are different if you want to file I-485 and I-140 or I-130 on the same day. An attorney may file I-485 for the applicant and I-140 or I-130 for the employer or relative, but each person and each form must have a properly signed Form G-28. Someone filing their own I-140 may also file I-140 and I-485 online together. If you do not have an attorney and are not filing your own I-140, you cannot file I-485 online on the same day as an employer's or relative's I-140 or I-130. The employer filing I-140 or the relative filing I-130 should first submit the petition through their own USCIS account. After USCIS issues a receipt notice, you can file I-485 through your own account.[1]

What about I-765, I-131, Supplement J, and I-693?
| Form | What to know when filing |
|---|---|
| I-765 work permit | Some categories can be filed online, including certain (c)(9) filings by people with a pending I-485. Not every work permit category can be filed online; check your category.[2] |
| I-131 advance parole | Some categories can be filed online. USCIS's list includes a specific category for people with a pending I-485 (I-131, Part 5.A), while some travel applications must be mailed. Choose the category that actually applies to you; do not select a different one just to file online. A wrong category can lead to denial, and the fee is not refunded.[2][6] |
| Supplement J | If your I-485 requires this form, you can file it with an online I-485. People with an I-485 receipt number beginning with IOE and a pending case may also file Supplement J separately online. NIW and EB-1A applicants do not need this form to confirm a job offer.[2][4] |
| I-693 medical exam | USCIS requires certain applicants to submit I-693 with I-485. For an online filing, open the sealed envelope from the doctor, scan and upload the completed and signed form, and keep the original and envelope until the I-485 has a final decision. USCIS may later ask to see the original. For a paper filing, put the doctor's sealed original envelope in the I-485 package without opening it.[2][5] |

Does each spouse or child need a separate account and application?
Each person needs an individual account and a separate I-485, including each child. USCIS says an account is for the account holder's use only, and minors must have their own accounts. Each applicant must file their own I-485.[3][4]

How much do online and paper filings cost?
The amounts below come from USCIS Fee Schedule G-1055, version dated September 9, 2026. Special categories, exemptions, and fee waivers have separate rules; check USCIS's instructions.[6]
| Filing | Paper | Online |
|---|---|---|
| I-485, age 14 or older | $1,440 | $1,390 |
| Child under 14 filing at the same time as one parent's I-485 | $950 | $900 |
| I-765, pending I-485 filed with a fee on or after April 1, 2024, category (c)(9) | $260 | $260 |
| I-131, designated category for a pending I-485 applicant (Part 5.A) | $630 | $580 |
| Supplement J | $0 | $0 |
| I-693 | $0 (doctor's fee is separate) | $0 (doctor's fee is separate) |
Whether you can file I-765 or I-131 online depends on your category. Do not assume that a general fee applies to your case. Before submitting, check the USCIS fee schedule.[2][6]
How long does it take to get a receipt after filing online?
For an online I-485, you upload a PDF. After a successful upload, the page first shows that it was submitted. That does not mean USCIS has accepted the filing, and it is not a receipt number. USCIS says it may take up to 30 days to process the uploaded PDF. After acceptance, the receipt number appears on the case card in your account; for some PDF uploads, USCIS sends a notice by mail.[1]
USCIS does not promise a specific number of days for an I-485 receipt. For other online forms completed step by step, a receipt number usually appears right away, though some may take up to three days. That timing does not apply to an I-485 filed by uploading a PDF.[1]
What problems can come up with online filing?
- File format: Follow the account's instructions to upload PDF, JPG, or JPEG files. Each file must be 12 MB or less and cannot be encrypted or password-protected.[1][2]
- Where to upload: The system lists the forms and evidence it accepts. A form can be included as evidence only if it appears on that list. You cannot change the application after submitting it. If USCIS rejects it, USCIS will explain why and how to file again.[1]
- Trouble uploading an I-140 approval notice: Upload it under the evidence category and location the system provides. USCIS does not say that moving the notice to “other evidence” will always fix an error. If you see an error, do not treat that workaround as an official instruction.[1]
- Form version, signature, and fee: Download the current version from the USCIS I-485 page, sign it as instructed, and check the current G-1055 fee schedule before filing.[4][6]
One applicant's online filing timeline
One forum user's account; it may not match other people's experience: A user on 1point3acres said they filed I-485, I-765, and I-131 online on September 24 and received three receipt numbers on September 28. The user's first attempt to upload the I-140 approval notice failed; it worked after they placed it under “other evidence.” This is one person's account. It does not guarantee the same receipt timing or that the same upload method will work for someone else.
When should I file online, and when should I mail a paper package?
Online filing may work for you if:
- USCIS's current list includes your I-485 category.
- I-140 or I-130 has already been filed, or you qualify to file the forms together online.
- You can prepare a separate form, signature, set of documents, and fee for each applicant.
- You can scan I-693 as required and keep the doctor's original sealed envelope.
A paper filing may be the better fit if:
- USCIS's list says your category must be filed by mail.
- You want to file on the same day as an employer's or relative's I-140 or I-130, but you do not have an attorney and are not filing your own I-140.
- You need a fee waiver and the account's process does not support your filing.
- The account will not accept your form category or documents, so you cannot complete the filing as instructed.
